Sir Isaac Newton
said, “We could state the truth of Christianity alone on this prophecy written
five centuries before Christ.”
We
have before us now, probably the most amazing prophecy in all of God’s word.
The Supplicating Prophet.
Daniel 9:20 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God;
Verse
twenty is a summary of what Daniel was up to.
Daniel
9:21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had
seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me
about the time of the evening oblation.
The
Touch.
The
word ‘man’ could be translated servant.
The angel Gabriel of course flies swiftly to this man of God with an
answer to his prayer. Notice the words,
“Touched me”
While
Daniel was praying even before he had finished. God had already answered his prayer, reminding us of the word of
Isaiah.
Isaiah
65:24 And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and
while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
While
Daniel was engrossed in prayer the heavenly touch came upon him. That’s what we need as we earnestly seek
God’s face in prayer, a touch from the master just to let us know that the
answer is on the way.
The
Time.
Daniel
9:21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had
seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me
about the time of the evening oblation.
The
evening oblation was about three in the afternoon. When they would take a lamb
and sacrifice it. Before the lamb would
be sacrificed the sinner would place his hands on the lamb. The Babylonians had
destroyed the temple. There were no evening oblations but Daniel still prayed
at that time. Look at Ezra nine.
Ezra
9:4-5 Then were assembled unto me
every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the
transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat astonied until the
evening sacrifice. [5] And at the
evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and
my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the Lord my God.
The
evening oblation speaks of Calvary. The
crucifixion of our Lord took place at the time of the evening oblation, three
o’clock in the afternoon. And it’s on this ground that we have access in prayer
as Hebrews chapter ten points out.
Hebrews
10:19-20 Having therefore, brethren,
boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, [20] By a new and
living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say,
his flesh;
The Tidings.
Daniel
9:22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come
forth to give thee skill and understanding.
Daniel
was perplexed. How could the captivity
be about to end and yet the other visions he had received spoke of trouble
ahead for Israel?
Was
God not going to keep his promises with Israel?
Would
the captivity continue?
Sometimes
we have problems and perplexities that we cannot understand. Real prayer will
bring the tidings that we desire. Skill and understanding was promised to
Daniel, this is something only the Lord can give.
The
Tenderness.
Daniel
9:23 At the beginning of thy
supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou
art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
“Thou
art greatly beloved.” That means thou art esteemed, thou art precious. Daniel
is an old man in tattered garments on his knees praying. He doesn’t look like
much to the world and yet he is precious to God. Every child of God is precious. But those who are living godly
lives will experience, in a deeper way, what it is to be precious in God’s
eyes. Like the apostle John.
John
13:23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus
loved.
God
has no favourites but godly believers will know how much they are loved.
The
Specific People.
It
is vitally important that we recognise who Gabriel is addressing. If we miss this we will lose the whole
meaning behind the prophecy and will be lost when it comes to rightly dividing
the Word. Look at verse twenty four.
Daniel
9:24 “ Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy
city,”
We
just want to think about whom is being addressed. Notice it says “Thy people”
and “Thy holy city”. This applies to
Israel and Jerusalem and has nothing whatsoever to do with the church. This
prophecy relates to Israel and its future. We must always distinguish in
scripture between the Jew, the Gentile and the church of Jesus Christ
Next
we must determine what is meant by the term ‘seventy weeks’ in verse twenty
four.
The
word week just simply means seven. It
could be seven minutes, or hours or weeks or days or months or even years. Some
would try and spiritualise it and say its just a number and doesn’t really mean
anything specifically. If we glance
back up the chapter we discover another time period look at verse two.
Daniel 9:2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
This
would suggest that it is seventy periods of seven years that we are looking
at. We will prove this beyond any doubt
as we look into the prophecy. We will see that it couldn’t be anything else.
Daniel uses the word again in Chapter ten.
Daniel
10:2-4 In those days I Daniel was
mourning three full weeks. [3] I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor
wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks
were fulfilled. [4] And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I
was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel;
When
speaking of weeks and meaning seven days, the word ‘days’ appears in the
passage. The word ‘days’ obviously is not in Daniel nine verse twenty-four.
Consider other occasions when a week meant seven years. Look at the following
verses from Genesis.
Genesis
29:18 And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for
Rachel thy younger daughter.
Genesis
29:27 Fulfil her week, and we will
give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven
other years.
Genesis
29:30 And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah,
and served with him yet seven other years.
One
week equals seven years. So we are looking at a period of four hundred and
ninety years in relation specifically to Israel.
Daniel
9:24 “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city,”
The
word ‘determined’ actually means cut off.
God has determined a four hundred and ninety years period specifically
in relation to his people Israel and the holy city Jerusalem.
The
Startling Prophecy.
Daniel
9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon
thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an
end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in
everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to
anoint the most Holy.
Six
things are listed as being accomplished by the end of the four hundred and
ninety-year period. This again would
prove that it’s not days or weeks because none of these things happened inside
such a short period of time.
a.
“To finish the transgression,” - the word ‘finish’ means simply to bring to an
end. The ‘transgression’ concerns Israel. They
were out of favour with God and were in captivity. They had sinned but God
promises that one-day their apostasy and wandering will be over. Transgression
speaks of rebellion, in other words the rebellion will end.
b. “And to make an end of sins,” This could
mean that their sin will be taken away, that god will bring it to
judgement. The word for end could be
translated, ‘seal up,’ just like the seal that was put on Daniel’s den. In other words their sin would be out of
sight. The transgression was national,
this is personal sin.
c. “And to make reconciliation for iniquity.”
The word for reconciliation is the word that is used for atonement or
covering. When were the sins covered?
The
sins were covered at Calvary. Therefore it must be a long period. Reconciliation for iniquity was accomplished
at the cross. When will it be applied
to Israel as a nation?
Zech.
13:1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to
the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.
Zech.
12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of
Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon
me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for
his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness
for his firstborn.
Zech.
13:6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he
shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.
Zech. 14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
These
verses from Zechariah reveal that it Israel will be saved when Christ comes
back to the earth at his Second Coming.
Israel will look upon him whom they have pierced.
d. “And to bring in everlasting
righteousness.” This speaks of Christ’s millennial kingdom. Consider the
following scriptures.
Isaiah
11:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity
for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his
mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
Jeremiah
23:5-6 Behold, the days come, saith
the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall
reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. [6] In
his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his
name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Psalm
2:6-9 Yet have I set my king upon my
holy hill of Zion. [7] I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me,
Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. [8] Ask of me, and I shall give
thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth
for thy possession. [9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt
dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
Jesus
shall reign on this earth. One could also look at Revelation chapter twenty for
further confirmation. Then will come the
eternal state and everlasting righteousness.
e. “And to seal up the vision and prophecy.”
All visions and prophecies will be fulfilled.
Their use will be required no more. Seal means to put an end to.
f. “And to anoint the most holy.” The words “the
most holy” appears thirty nine times in the Old Testament and always had
reference to the holy of holies. The holy of holies will be anointed. Therefore
there will be a temple on earth during the millennial reign of Christ. Ezekiel
chapters forty to forty eight speak of this great millennial temple.
As
you can see this prophecy looks ahead to the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus
Christ. Let’s continue to look at this
startling prophecy.
Daniel 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
“Know
therefore and understand,” This is an exhortation that we might understand this
prophesy. God wants you to know all about the future, he wants you to
understand. When we study this passage
we are pleasing God.
We
will now consider the beginning of the four hundred and ninety years.
We
have a commencement date. Look again at verse twenty five.
Daniel
9:25 Know therefore and understand,
that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem
unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks:
the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
When
did the commandment go forth to restore and build Jerusalem? Consider Ezra
chapter one.
Ezra
1:1-3 Now in the first year of Cyrus
king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be
fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made
a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
[2] Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The Lord God of heaven hath given me all
the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at
Jerusalem, which is in Judah. [3] Who is there among you of all his people? his
God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build
the house of the Lord God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.
This
is the decree of Cyrus around 538 BC. It couldn’t be the right one, as we will
see in a moment. The coming Messiah is
linked to the fulfilment so this would be too early if we add 483 years. Note that this decree says nothing about
building the city. It mentions only the house at Jerusalem. Consider another scripture from Ezra.
Ezra
7:12-13 Artaxerxes, king of kings,
unto Ezra the priest, a scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect peace,
and at such a time. [13] I make a decree, that all they of the people of
Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their
own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee.
This
decree was about 458 BC. This would,
if we add 483 years this would bring us to the time of Christ. But not to the time when he is “Messiah the
prince” also nothing is said in this decree about building the city.
That
only leaves one other possibility for the commencement date of this four
hundred and ninety-year period, or four hundred and eighty three, as we shall
see in a moment.
Nehemiah
is told about the condition of Jerusalem. This is about ninety years after
Cyrus’s degree. Certainly the city had
not been rebuilt look at some scriptures from Nehemiah.
Neh.
1:3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in
the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also
is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.
Neh.
2:12-16 And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I
any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there
any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon. [13] And I went out by
night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung
port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates
thereof were consumed with fire. [14] Then I went on to the gate of the
fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was
under me to pass. [15] Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the
wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.
[16] And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as
yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the
rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.
Jerusalem
was in ruin and Nehemiah asks the king for permission to go and build the city.
Neh.
2:5-6 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have
found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city
of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it. [6] And the king said unto me,
(the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when
wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
Notice
the last words of verse six, “So it pleased the king to send me.” This is our
commencement date. When did it start?
We find out in chapter two verse one.
Neh.
2:1 And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes
the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto
the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.
Artaxerxes
came to power in 465 BC. So this decree
went forth in 445 BC. This gives us a commencement date for the decree.
Take
a look now at Daniel chapter nine verse twenty-five.
Daniel
9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the
commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall
be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again,
and the wall, even in troublous times.
Daniel
confirms that this decree will be issued in troublous times. Any one who has
read the book of Nehemiah will know that this was the case. This scripture tells us that from the going
forth, 445 BC until Messiah the price shall be 7 + 62 = 69 of the seventy weeks
of years that is 483 years. If we add
483 to 445 BC it would bring us to about 38 AD. That is not correct.
I
want to refer now to the work of Sir Robert Anderson and his book The Coming
Prince. How many days are in a year? We would easily answer that 365 ¼. How many days are in a prophetic year?
Consider the following scriptures.
Genesis
7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the
seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great
deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Genesis
7:24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.
Genesis
8:4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the
month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
You
can see from the previous verses those five months equals one hundred and fifty
days. That means thirty days per month. If that is the case then a prophetic
year equals three hundred and sixty days. We can see the same thing again in
Revelation.
Rev.
11:2-3 But the court which is without
the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles:
and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. [3] And I
will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two
hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
Again
forty-two months equals twelve hundred and sixty days. Again thirty days per
month. Let’s go back to Daniel chapter nine.
Daniel
9:25 Know therefore and understand,
that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem
unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks:
the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
The
first period mentioned is seven weeks, a forty nine-year period. Most believe it took that time to rebuild
the city. Also it may well coincide with the closing of the Old Testament
cannon.
Add
to this the sixty two weeks. That makes a total of four hundred and eighty
three years. Let’s do some calculations.
483
x 360 days per year. = 173880
Days.
According
to Sir Robert Anderson from 445 BC to 32 AD is a period of 477 years.
In
fact he got down to the very day, 477 years and twenty four days.
He
had to cut out one year because they jumped from 1 BC to 1 AD. That brings us
down to 476 years and 24 days.
476
years + 24 days = 173764 [working on our 365 days per year]
He
then added 119 days for the leap years making a total of 173883 days. That
would be close enough for me. Sir
Robert Anderson after checking with the royal observatory was told that a
365-day year exceeds a solar year by 1/128 of a day. That means he could deduct
the three days leaving a total of 173880 days.
The
exact number prophesied in Daniel.
Daniel
9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the
commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall
be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again,
and the wall, even in troublous times.
Messiah
the prince should have been recognised by the Jews. This was the very day that the lord rode into Jerusalem. No
wonder Jesus said the following.
Luke
19:41-44 And when he was come near, he
beheld the city, and wept over it, [42] Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou,
at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they
are hid from thine eyes. [43] For the days shall come upon thee, that thine
enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee
in on every side, [44] And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy
children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another;
because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
Their
day had come but they rejected the Messiah. What a prophecy we have here in
Daniel nine it is truly a startling prophecy.
Daniel
9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for
himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city
and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end
of the war desolations are determined.
Let’s
continue to look at this startling prophecy. Here is a prophecy that the Jews
just cannot accept. After his triumphal entry verse twenty-six says that,
“Messiah shall be cut off.” What does it mean to be cut off? Look at Leviticus
chapter seven.
Leviticus
7:20 But the soul that eateth of the
flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that pertain unto the Lord, having
his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.
To
be cut of means to kill or destroy. Look at the following verse in
Proverbs.
Proverbs
2:22 But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors
shall be rooted out of it.
The
words, “cut off,” were used of the death of a criminal. Messiah would die a criminal’s death. Look
at Isaiah fifty-three.
Isaiah
53:12 Therefore will I divide him a
portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because
he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the
transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the
transgressors.
Back
in Daniel chapter nine verse twenty six it says speaking of Messiah’s
death, “but not for himself.” We could
say that he would die a substitutionary death and that is correct, but the
phrase is more correctly translated, “And have nothing,” in other words, he
would have nothing of what he deserves. How true this was. Instead of a royal
crown he was given a crown of thorns, instead of a royal robe they stripped him
of his garments, instead of a throne he received a cross. What a book we have
here!
John
1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
How
indeed Messiah was cut off and in the most serious senses of all, as Psalm
twenty-two reminds us.
Psalm
22:1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from
helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
Look
again at verse twenty six.
Daniel
9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for
himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city
and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end
of the war desolations are determined.
There
is more to this than just the cross. We
are told that a certain, “people are going to destroy the city and the end
thereof shall be with a flood.”
Nahum
1:8 But with an overrunning flood he
will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his
enemies.
The
city of Jerusalem is going to be destroyed after the death of Messiah the
prince. When did this happen? In 70AD
Titus destroyed Jerusalem. Ninety seven thousand were taken captive and
thousands lost their lives. The Lord had spoken of this also.
Luke
21:20-24 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that
the desolation thereof is nigh. [21] Then let them which are in Judaea flee to
the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let
not them that are in the countries enter thereinto. [22] For these be the days
of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. [23] But woe
unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for
there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. [24] And
they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into
all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the
times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
Let’s
review verse twenty six.
Daniel
9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for
himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city
and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end
of the war desolations are determined.
Four
hundred and eighty three years brought us to the point were Christ was
proclaimed Prince. Then he was crucified and Jerusalem was destroyed some
thirty-eight years later. What about the last seven years of this prophecy?
It
cannot have been fulfilled after Christ’s death for nothing happened that would
fulfil verse twenty-four. When Christ was rejected by Israel, the prophetic
clock, as far as Israel is concerned stopped. A new time began known as the age
of the church. Should follow.
The
church age was ushered in on the day of Pentecost. God has stopped dealing with Israel as Paul states in the book of
Romans.
Romans
11:1 I say then, Hath God cast away
his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of
the tribe of Benjamin.
Romans
11:25-26 For I would not, brethren,
that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own
conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of
the Gentiles be come in. [26] And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is
written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away
ungodliness from Jacob:
Praise
God Israel has a future. Between these
two verses we have the church age. That means that there are seven years still
to be fulfilled regarding Israel. You cannot take sixty-nine weeks as being
literal and spiritualise the last week.
The
Satanic Prince.
Daniel
9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant
with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the
sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations
he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined
shall be poured upon the desolate.
Who
is the “he” spoken of in verse twenty-seven?
We need to go back to verses twenty-six and look for the last person
mentioned.
Daniel
9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for
himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city
and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end
of the war desolations are determined.
Notice
the phrase, “ The people of the prince that shall come.” Who were the
people? It was the Romans who attacked
Israel. This prince shall have a link with the Roman Empire. Surely this is the
little horn of Daniel seven we have already studied
Daniel
7:7-9 After this I saw in the night
visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong
exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and
stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts
that were before it; and it had ten horns. [8] I considered the horns, and,
behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were
three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn
were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things. [9] I beheld till the thrones were cast
down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the
hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and
his wheels as burning fire.
This
is the antichrist. The ‘he’ in verse twenty seven is the satanic prince that
shall come. Look at what he will do.
Daniel
9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant
with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the
sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations
he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined
shall be poured upon the desolate.
“He
shall confirm the covenant with many for one week.” He will make peace with
Israel. I am told the word used suggests coercing. Today we live in a world of sanctions. Perhaps this leader of the
ten-nation confederation will force Israel to make peace, “The many” will agree
and some will be opposed.
A
seven year peace treaty with Israel shall be signed, what a coup for this world
leader. Well did Isaiah say.
Isaiah
28:15 Because ye have said, We have
made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the
overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have
made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
Verse
twenty seven continues, “and in the midst of the week he shall cause the
sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations
he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined
shall be poured upon the desolate.”
In
the middle of the week, in other words after three and one half years he will
break the agreement and will cause the overspreading of abominations. Is this
future? Christ spoke of this event as being future.
Matthew
24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by
Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
Antichrist
will stop the worship of God in Israel. For this to happen the Jews need to be
in the land and the temple has to be built.
Why will antichrist take this course of action? He will want to be worshipped as God.

Thes. 2:2-4 That ye be not soon shaken
in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from
us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. [3] Let no man deceive you by any
means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and
that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; [4] Who opposeth and
exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that
he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

13:4-7 And they worshipped the dragon
which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is
like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? [5] And there was given
unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given
unto him to continue forty and two months. [6] And he opened his mouth in
blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that
dwell in heaven. [7] And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and
to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and
nations.
This
confirms much of what we have studied already from Daniel. The conclusion we
can draw from this is that for three and one half years he will persecute
Israel. Revelation twelve bears this out.
Rev.
12:6 And the woman fled into the
wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her
there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
Rev.
12:13-14 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted
the woman which brought forth the man child. [14] And to the woman were given
two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her
place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the
face of the serpent.
This
period of three and one half years we call the great tribulation. Look at the
end of verse twenty-seven.
Daniel
9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst
of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the
overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the
consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
Until
the completion and that will be when the “desolater,” as we could translate
‘desolate,’ is dealt with.
Daniel
nine is truly an amazing chapter.
